| Wakayama Prefecture is situated in the southwestern part of Kii peninsula, in the southwestern part of the Main Island of Japan. An area is 4,724 km2 and occupied about 80 % by mountainous area. Because good lumber was produced from that mountainous area, Wakayama has been called a wooden country (Kii-kuni, in Japanese). Most of mountains are relatively steep and about 1,000m above sea level, running from a west-southwest to east-northeast parts. Most of the rivers are originated from this mountainous area, and they repeat meandering and flow into the Kii Channel or the Pacific Ocean. The region of flat plain is only located in the alluvial plane developed along the Kinokawa River and near the mouth of other rivers. And Rias coast extend to 643 km from north Kada to southern mouth of the Kumanogawa River. |
